Double Image, Double Image-Oare designed to perform well with little CPU use, allowing you to continue using your PC while a backup occurs, however antivirus software can sometimes cause poor CPU and Disk IO performance with disk-to-disk backup software.
Below is a topic that describes possible problems using antivirus software and how to easily overcome the CPU and IO performance problem.
PROBLEM
By design, disk-to-disk backup software, like Double Image, can perform many disk reads and disk writes to accomplish a backup.
Disk writes cause antivirus software to perform scanning on the disk write blocks.
- Since Double Image-O creates a disk cache file of its own to deal with open files, many disk writes can occur to the cache, particularly on busy systems that
have relational databases being widely used. As a result Double Image-O needs to keep up with the disk writes of the open files.
Should the antivirus software monitor each of the disk writes within the cache file, then system performance may slow. This can occur when using Microsoft Exchange and SQL databases, for example. - Another condition can occur where the target folder on a local drive is being scanned by the antivirus software; here again the disk writes can be many and the antivirus software consumes a lot of CPU and PROCESSOR time.
SOLUTION
Consider filtering out these paths in the antivirus, anti spyware utilities:
- Double Image cache location
- Configure antivirus settings to not scan the Double Image-O cache file. This can be accomplished by creating a folder that the cache file is always assigned to, then configuring the antivirus settings to not scan the folder.
Create a folder named <drive:\<cache_folder>
Example: D:/DIO
- Configure antivirus settings to not scan the Double Image-O cache file. This can be accomplished by creating a folder that the cache file is always assigned to, then configuring the antivirus settings to not scan the folder.
- In the Double Image-O backup option settings
- click 'Open File Copy Options'
- Specify settings manually
- Change the cache location to the folder value <drive:\<cache_folder>
- Double Image log location, if creating detail logs
- Target path for backup files, if problem persists
- antivirus and anti spyware may also scrutinize network outut, however this is usually not a problem.
Saving the settings for all new profiles
Let's assume you make the above changes to a Double Image profile, <profile.bu>, it is a good idea to save the profile as a default profile.
By saving the changed Double Image profile as a default, any new created profiles will inherit the backup and restore options of the default profile.
-
From the menu: File, Save as Default
In the future when you create new backup profiles, the backup option changes you made above, will now be carried to new profile backup options.
